What is a dle game? A guide to daily guessing games

Dle games are once-a-day puzzle games inspired by Wordle. Here's where the "-dle" suffix came from and the best dle games to play free right now.

What is a dle game? A guide to daily guessing games

If you have ever typed a word into a grid of colored boxes and then sent a cryptic string of green and yellow squares to a group chat, you have already played a dle game. The genre has exploded since 2021, and the name is everywhere now. But what exactly makes something a "dle game," and which ones are worth your time?

Where the "-dle" suffix comes from

It starts with Wordle. Josh Wardle built the original as a gift for his partner, published it quietly in late 2021, and watched it go viral within weeks. The mechanic was simple: guess a five-letter word in six tries, with color-coded feedback after each guess. Everyone in the world got the same puzzle on the same day. The New York Times bought it in early 2022, and by then a small avalanche of imitators had already borrowed the name structure, swapping the "Wordle" root for whatever their theme was. Heardle for music. Worldle for geography. Nerdle for math equations. The "-dle" ending became shorthand for an entire genre.

What all dle games share

The suffix signals a specific set of conventions, not just a vibe. A genuine dle game typically has all of the following:

  • One puzzle per day, the same puzzle for every player on the planet
  • A reset at midnight (usually midnight Eastern Time in the US)
  • A shareable result, most often a grid of colored emoji blocks, so you can post your score without spoiling the answer
  • A short play session, usually five minutes or less

That last point matters more than it sounds. The daily limit is a feature, not a restriction. It creates a appointment-style habit and a shared cultural moment. Everyone at the office had the same Wordle on Tuesday morning. That communal hook is what separated the genre from ordinary mobile puzzle games.

The main flavors of dle game

The genre has branched into a few recognizable families.

Word dles

The original and still the most common type. You guess a word, and the game tells you which letters are correct, present but misplaced, or absent entirely. Variations multiply the letter count, add themed vocabulary, or change the feedback system. Wordly at Greatest Games is a six-letter word game that extends the classic format just enough to add meaningful extra difficulty without dragging out the session.

Logic and grid dles

These replace language with spatial or deductive reasoning. Sudoku dles, nonogram dles, and star-battle puzzles all live here. The daily constraint works especially well for logic games because a single carefully constructed puzzle is often more satisfying than an infinite procedural feed. Angler is a clean example of the form: you guess an angle in degrees and work toward the target through hot-and-cold feedback. It sounds niche and plays beautifully.

Number and math dles

Nerdle is the best-known. The idea is to replace the alphabet with digits and operators and ask players to reconstruct a valid equation. Variations range from straightforward arithmetic to more elaborate numerical reasoning.

Color and visual dles

A newer branch. Instead of words or numbers, the puzzle asks you to identify or recreate a color, a shape, or a visual relationship. Chroma at Greatest Games puts you in the role of a paint mixer: you blend primary colors to hit a target shade, adjusting proportions across a few attempts.

What to look for in a good dle game

A strong dle game has a well-defined success state (you know when you have won), a fair feedback system (every piece of information the game gives you is accurate and useful), and a difficulty curve that feels like your own skill rather than random luck. The best ones also have replay value through variety: if Tuesday's angle puzzle and Wednesday's angle puzzle feel like genuinely different problems, the designer has done their job.

Avoid any site that calls itself a dle game but hides the puzzle behind an account wall or a paywall. The genre's DNA is democratic. Anyone with a browser should be able to play.

Play a dle game right now

Greatest Games publishes a full slate of free daily puzzle games, no account required, one fresh puzzle per game every day resetting at midnight ET, each one designed to fit inside five minutes. Word games, logic games, color games, angle games. If you want somewhere to start, Wordly is a satisfying twist on the classic word-guessing format, and Angler will quietly take over your mornings.

The "-dle" genre earned its staying power by respecting your time. One good puzzle a day, shared with everyone, done in five minutes. That is still the pitch, and it still works.
