Notes on Chroma

Where Chroma comes from

Color mixing has two rival traditions, and most of us were only taught one. The kindergarten version is pigment: blue and yellow make green, everything eventually makes mud. The other tradition is light. Isaac Newton split sunlight with a prism and bent the spectrum into the first color wheel; two centuries later James Clerk Maxwell projected three filtered photographs of a tartan ribbon on top of one another and produced the first color photograph, proving that a few primaries of light could reconstruct the rest. Screens work that way. So, less obviously, does print: a newspaper photo is a field of tiny halftone dots that your eye averages into a continuous tone at reading distance. Artists call that partitive mixing, and pointillists built a whole movement on it.

Chroma belongs to the light-and-dots tradition. Its mixer averages your chosen colors rather than muddying them like paint — which is exactly why the game is harder, and more instructive, than the kindergarten rules predict. Wrapped around that optics lesson is the modern daily-puzzle form: one shared target, six rows, a scorecard you can compare at lunch.

How to get better at Chroma

Judge lightness before hue. Squint at the target until the color almost disappears; what remains is its value. A mix that nails the hue family but lands two shades too dark scores worse than beginners expect, because the game measures difference the way eyes do, and eyes weight lightness heavily. Pick your three colors so their average brightness lands near the target's before you worry about anything else.

Unlearn the paint rules. Because Chroma averages like light, yellow and blue do not make green — they cancel toward a tired gray. If the target is green, you need green, or neighbors like lime and teal, in the recipe. And the neutrals behave asymmetrically: white pulls a mix toward pale far harder than black pulls it toward dark, so darkening usually wants a heavy black share or an already-dark color like navy or maroon doing the work.

Remember that an average lives inside its ingredients. Your mix can never be more vivid than the colors you feed it, and mixing across the wheel drains saturation fast. For a saturated target, build the recipe from close neighbors on the wheel; reserve opposite-side colors for deliberately muting a mix that reads too loud.

Treat the percentage as terrain. Each row's accuracy score is a hill to climb: change one thing at a time — a single swap, or one 5% transfer between slots — and read whether the number rose or fell. Two guesses that vary one variable teach you more than five guesses that reshuffle everything.

Close with small steps. Above roughly 97%, stop swapping colors entirely. The remaining distance is proportion, and the winning line at 99.5% is usually one or two 5% nudges away. Move weight from your most dominant color first; it has the most leverage.

A round in the life

The target is a dusty, mid-dark violet. You open with purple, blue, and white at 40/40/20 — right family, but the row reads 88.4%: too pale, too blue. You cut white to 10 and give purple 50. The score climbs to 94.1%. Still a touch cool, so you swap blue for magenta at the same weights — 97.8%, warmer now and close. From here it is proportions only: you shift 5% from magenta to purple, submit 55/35/10, and the row comes back past the line. Solved in four, with two guesses to spare.
