Introducing Afterglow: Rebuild a Color From Memory
Meet Afterglow, our daily color-memory game. Study five colors one at a time, then rebuild each from memory with hue, saturation, and brightness sliders.
Try this. Stare at a color for a few seconds, then close your eyes and picture it. You will be sure you have it. Then you open your eyes, and the real color is a little warmer, a little deeper, a little off from the one in your head. Color is one of the first things our eyes read and one of the last things our memory keeps. Afterglow is built entirely around that gap.
It is the daily game for people who trust their eyes, and it is happy to prove that trust is mostly misplaced. There are no words to know and no trivia to recall. There is only a color, a few seconds to hold onto it, and your honest attempt to build it back.
How Afterglow works
Every day Afterglow shows you five colors, one at a time. A color floods the card while a short countdown ticks down, and then it is gone. Now you rebuild it from memory.
Your tools are three sliders: hue, saturation, and brightness. Each slider track is painted with the exact gradient it controls, so the hue bar runs the full rainbow, the saturation bar fades from gray to full color, and the brightness bar runs from black to bright. The control is the color picker. As you drag, the whole card fills with your current guess in real time, so you are not working blind. You are matching what you remember against what you see.
When it feels right, you lock it in. Afterglow splits the card in two, your color on top and the original on the bottom, each labeled with its exact hue, saturation, and brightness values, so you can see precisely where your memory drifted. Was the hue close but the brightness too high? Did you remember a vivid teal that was actually a muted one? The split tells you.
The score is honest
Each round is worth up to 10 points, and the scoring is not eyeballed. Afterglow measures the distance between your color and the target using CIE76 ΔE, the same perceptual color-difference math used in print and design work. A near match earns a 9 or a 10. A guess in the right family but off on tone earns a 5. A confident miss earns an honest 2. Five rounds add up to a possible 50, and every result lands with a one-line verdict that scales with how close you got, from a quiet "pixel-perfect" to a generous "bold reinterpretation."
The five colors are the same for everyone each day, so a 42 actually means something. It is a score you can compare, and the share card is a clean row of five squares, one per round, shaded by how well you did. It never shows the colors, so it spoils nothing for the next player.
Why it is harder than it looks
The trap is confidence. Hue is the channel people remember best, so you will usually get close on the color itself. Saturation and brightness are where memory quietly fails. A color that looked rich and dark in the moment often lives in your head as something brighter and flatter, and you will not notice until the split reveal puts the two side by side. The game is less about having a good eye and more about being honest with yourself in the second after the color disappears.
One tip to start
Do not try to memorize a name for the color. "Teal" or "salmon" will lead you to a generic version of that name, not the specific shade you were shown. Instead, in the seconds you have, note the two things people forget: how saturated it is and how bright it is. Lock those two feelings in first, then chase the hue with the slider. Most of the points you lose are in tone, not color, so spend your memory there.
